HAIR STYLIST
How did you get started using Redken Products?
- I started working at Hair Vibrations. That was the hair color they used.
Have you tried any other product other than Redken? If so, how do you think it compares?
- Yes, I really like Redken semi color. The only thing I don’t like is the red dye [because] it fades so easily. The red also never gives me the color I want. Redken fades quickly.
Have you had any bad experiences using Redken? If so, explain them?
- No, it's pretty predictable. If I pick a color it usually does what I want it to and I can usually always predict the outcome.
Have you had anyone hate their hair color and give them emotional trauma?
- One time. One lady was very upset when she left. She was really blonde and put a low light in her hair and she flipped out. She wanted to come back that Saturday for me to change it and I couldn’t get her in. So instead she went somewhere else and then got her hair messed up even more then had to come back to me. In the end she just learned her lesson to only come to me and never to try to be so difficult.
What is the most unusual color you have put in someone’s hair?
- Pink. And it turned out really well. She had black hair and it went in really well. It faded so quickly then looked bad. Trying to be different is not always the best thing.
How much do you spend a month on hair color supplies?
- About 200 dollars. I know it sounds [like] a lot but in the end I make a lot more money then I spend.
How much does it cost to get your hair colored?
- From 40 dollars 120 dollars. It depends on the length of your hair and how thick your hair is. If it does not take me that long than I do not charge as much.
When you use the hair color does it ever affect you?
- No effects on me usually.
What precautions do you take when coloring hair?
- Gloves, towels around my clients, sometimes I add equal sweetener to color if they're allergic to it so it takes away the burning. They always wear capes also. I always make sure my customers are feeling OK with what they're doing.
Will you keep using L’Oreal products?
- Yes, I would like to try other color lines but there will always be some hair styling products of Redken I will always use. I just can not give up those certain products in which have never done me wrong and are always there for me.
Have you ever colored any men’s hair?
- Rarely do I ever color men’s hair. But we have male clients who do come into the salon regularly. We do have men who come in regularly who are not my clients to use Camo by Redken. It is more of a color which looks like George Clooney’s hair color.
How often should a women color her hair?
- It ranges between 4 and 8 weeks. Every person is different in their own way.

"Jen" is a 21 year-old Caucasian Female
Do you or have you ever used L’Oreal hair products?
Haleigh:No
Kiara-No
What do you think of them?
Jen: I think they are the best, they are the only hair color I have ever used and feel that they make my hair look the best.
Has there ever been a time when you were not satisfied with what they offered?
Jen: Not Really, The first time I got my hair dyed I was 15 and they really didn’t have the color I was looking for, but when I started using it I have had no problems.
Do you feel that they appeal to many ethnicities?
Jen: I say they do [because] they have many people of different races who are actually the spokeswomen and/or [models for the] cover for the product, so I would say they do.
(Shown the website) Do you think that after reading and viewing this website you better understand L’Oreal?
Jen: Wow, that is amazing! I didn’t know none of that stuff, except a couple of things in the "10 things a consumer should know" section. (4 & 8) But the money and the history of the product was really good info. It really doesn’t change the way I feel though, because I have used L’Oreal for so long and they are the best to me.
Any last thoughts or comments about this interview?
Jen: After seeing all that you all did, [it] does give me a better understanding of L’Oreal, but I’m not sure if you guys are trying to bash them or what, I just think they are good and I like the way they make my hair look. (After being told what our true objectives were for the site, she felt a little more positive towards it.)
Do you know anything about L’Oreal hair Color products?
Haleigh: Yeah, I know that it [is] for women with straighter hair.
Kiara: I know that they make great hair coloring products. There are a lot of celebrities that advertise their products as well.
(Shown the website) After viewing the website would you ever use L’Oreal hair color?
Haleigh: Yeah, I would but that Eugene guy is not cool. I do like the fact that they are one of the best in the world, that must mean that they are really good at what they do and their products are very good.
Kiara: No, because their products have a lot of chemicals that can cause cancer, and is not FDA approved.
Does anything strike you about L’Oreal and their hair color products?
Haleigh: Just the facts about the history and the laborers-- how 60% of the employers are women and not the head people but the people behind the scene[s] are mostly women, which was bogus.
Kiara: What strikes me about the product is [that] they only have one African American model to advertise their products.
So If you had to color your hair would L’Oreal be your product of choice? Why or why not?
Haleigh: I think I would use them because they seem as if they are the best and they seem good even though they have their little controversies.
Kiara: No, because their goal is not to target African American women.
Any last thoughts or comments about this interview?
Haleigh: Yes, this was a very good website I like it.
Kiara: I learned a lot about this product. I never knew that the chemicals in their hair color are so dangerous.

Have you seen women come in here with damage caused by hair color?
Sara: Well, I have seen some really bad hair colors and I have seen some chemical burns on the scalp but nothing that we couldn’t give them to fix.
Do you ever think women will just stop coloring their hair?
Sara: Oh no! I see women come in here everyday trying to be someone their not just with their hair color. Sometimes it amazes me what people will do just to look good.
What is the worst thing you have seen because of hair color?
Sara: I have seen a girl try to dye her hair bleach blonde, but it ended up making burns on her scalp from leaving it on too long.
Do you think the economy affects the hair color business?
Sara: No, because hair dye is getting so cheap these days. I think women would give something up just to look good. In this society it's all about looks sometimes.
(I showed her some of the chemicals in the hair color and how they effect people)
Do you color your hair and would you ever stop after looking at this information?
Sara: Sadly no, because I can’t give it up. It is just embedded into your mind that bad hair is horrible.
